Neon has sprung up among the best Agents to play due to her last few patch buffs which removed the movement error on the slides. This gives Neon the ability to zip around the map being a nuisance to enemy Agents. However, in the hands of chaotic and skilled players, Neon can be as devastating as Jett, if not more.
This piece will look at how to play Neon in Valorant, the right way. Let’s waste no time and take a look at her speciality.
How To Play Neon In Valorant: Why Pick Her Over Jett?
Jett has been the face of Valorant since it’s inception but Neon has come to dethrone her. Neon’s movement ability coupled with her Ultimate and Relay Bolt is lethal for any situation. Not only will she be used for space creation but to also open up rounds.
The ability to zoom past your opponents and make them displace their crosshair so that your team can shoot them is a real asset. Even without buying a major weapon, Neon can help win rounds. However, to ensure that you understand her properly, we must look through and deeply understand her abilities.
Q Ability: Relay Bolt
The Relay Bolt is an extremely good crowd control ability if used well. However, it is not easy for beginners to use since most of the time you will end up hitting yourself or your teammates when you enter a site. The Relay Bolt is like a Breach Stun and a Sova Dart mixed into one. It bounces twice and concusses an Area of Effect where it bounces.
The bounces concuss the enemies rendering them stunned, this can help you go in and get an easy kill. There are many Neon Lineups you can learn for different maps which can make entry easier for you. This video above will help you learn them.
E Ability: High Gear
The new and improved High Gear lets you slide a considerable distance and without any movement error so your shots will hit where you aim. This is an incredibly overpowered ability and in the hands of a master tracker or aimer, it can be lethal to play against.
Neon has two base charges of the slide and it resets after every 2 kills. Right click to slide which is going to let you zoom past the enemy and shoot them in the back. High Gear is good for a lot of things but mainly you will be using it to create space on site, distract your enemies or displace their crosshair in fights.
Aside from the standard forward slide, you can do a ‘diagonal slide,’ a ‘reverse slide’ and many more tricks should you master her after a while of playing. This video will help you learn the backwards slide.
C Ability: Fast Lane
Neon throws up her hands and essentially produces two electric walls. In earlier patches, these two parallel walls used to damage foes but now it doesn’t. With this ability, Neon can sneak into sites and create some space for herself without the whole team shooting her. Enemies can shoot through the wall so be careful, you could get spammed.
Remember, this ability is a projectile like ability. The walls will stop where Neon is looking and the distance is pretty long. For example; So use it well and divide sites like a pro to create space for your team. Although, the duration is considerably shorter so you will have to work quickly. Above, we have shown you the difference on how crucial placing your crosshair farther off is to the effectiveness of the Fast Lane.
X Ability: Overdrive
Neon’s Ultimate Ability might also be the most overpowered one in the game. Neon charges up and unleashes a barrage of finger lasers. There are 40 ticks to it and it recharges after a brief delay. Every kill resets the meter for Overdrive and the lasers have no movement error so you can move while shooting. This is one of the best Abilities to use on an eco round when you are short of a weapon.
The Overdrive is quite effective when taking space and if you have it ready, use it to push the enemies back and even get kills. Be sure to always be on the move though.
How To Play Neon On Attack
Neon on attack is a masterful space creator in the hands of a crazy player who is not afraid to take fights. Your job is to open up sites for your team and slide around in such a way that your life is tradeable. You should not be taking fights alone or entering sites alone. Co-ordinating with your team and sliding into areas where you can be traded without another casualty is your goal, you don’t want to be another liability.
The lineup video we showed you earlier should help you use your Relay Bolt properly, once you do, throw up your Fast Lane and communicate with your team where you are pushing so they can follow behind you and trade your kill should you die. Remember, as a Duelist, your objective is to create space and be tradeable, do not be discouraged if you die without getting a kill because you still did your job.
Save your Overdrive if your team is short on Credits and buy a weapon for your teammate. The ideal buy for pistols is a Relay Bolt with either a Frenzy or a Ghost. For ecos, we recommend a Stinger and for buy rounds, a Phantom should help your aggressive sliding style because it is much more forgiving than the Vandal, especially if you will be spraying directly after sliding.
How To Play Neon On Defense
Your job as Neon on the defensive side is to take strategic fights and get out if you are overwhelmed. Try to get early info on the enemy and see if you can grab a kill while you are at it. The Relay Bolt can be used to stun enemies while the High Gear slide can be used to quickly get a kill and bail yourself out. You will be better off partnering with an Initiator so they can throw out utility for you to know where the enemies are.
When you are certain of an enemy’s position, getting a kill and moving out is easier. Your job is to always maintain a number’s advantage so if you are getting overwhelmed on a site, get out and play for retakes with your Fast Lane and Ultimate ability. As a Duelist on defense, your job is to get kills, delay enemies from entering sites and playing the sensible numbers game.
It can be really easy for you to overheat and go for more kills if you get one but we recommend you retreat back and play the number’s game. That is the key to success with Neon on defense, knowing what fights to take and what to avoid.
Neon Tips And Tricks
Here are some tips and tricks for Neon which will help you take sensible gunfights and find more success as a Duelist.
- Neon’s most useful trait in a gunfight is to mess up the enemy’s crosshair placement. A lot of times, pro players will jump onto an angle not even intending to secure a kill but bait for their teammate’s swing, this can help you be a team player without firing a bullet.
- If your Ultimate Ability is ready, we recommend buying your teammates a gun. This can help your team be a more lethal unit, especially if you are on a buy round and need as many guns as possible.
- Neon is one of the most combo-able Agents in the game. On attack, throw your Relay Bolt and Fast Lane and jump onto site with your teammates and clear as many angles as possible. If you execute everything correctly, you will have the site.
- Use Overdrive in shorter ranges. Longer ranges will make it harder for you to aim. Try to go for the enemy’s head no matter the range, it will be a smoother and quicker kill. Always stay on the move and don’t forget to utilize your slide.
